Thomas Thetcher postcard – a wonderful postcard for your collection.
The gravestone of Thomas Thetcher is in the grounds of Winchester Cathedral, and was seen by Bill Wilson, an American Serviceman, when he passed through Winchester on his way to fight in WW1. He remembered it as he had a friend called Thatcher and the similarity in surnames struck him, as well as the message on the stone
‘ Here lies a Hampshire Grenadier
Who Caught his death
Drinking cold small beer’.
Some years after the war, he was inspired to found the Alcoholics Anonymous Movement after struggling with his own drinking, and this gravestone and its inscription are in the Big Book of AA, printed in 1939.
